Artmagic - Down In The River

The new single from Artmagic, ‘Down in the River’, has been released. It’s available now as a 4 track download EP, or as a 2 track vinyl picture disc, the latter featuring my cover artwork. Extra tracks on the EP are new song ‘Is This Love? (Quiet)’, together with cover versions of Soft Cell’s ‘Youth’ and Robyn’s ‘Call Your Girlfriend’.

Artmagic are Suede guitarist Richard Oakes and singer Sean McGhee - a songwriter/producer/engineer who has worked with the likes of Britney Spears, Alanis Morrissette and Sugababes. To coincide with the release of their new single, Sean and Richard were interviewed last week by Chris Hawkins on BBC6 Music – you can listen to their conversation here.

I’ve decided to mark the release of ‘Down in the River’ by publishing exclusively here a series of photographs I took of Artmagic early this year. These photos formed part of the body of reference material I used to create the portraits of Sean and Richard (above) which graced the lyrics booklet of their debut album ‘Become The One You Love’. We held the photo session on a bitterly cold afternoon in January along Brighton seafront. One idea was to echo the various window views from the digipack by having Richard and Sean drawn behind glass. It seemed logical to pose them around the same covered seafront benches which had been the inspiration for the cover image.

The resulting photos were effective – and yet sketching them, though technically possible, was something I found difficult to justify. This is because, I think, the photos felt like an end in themselves. Here’s a small handful…
