Best Of

I enjoyed doing this jazzy little Warholesque remix of some of my recent Genetics journal portraits for the cover of their 'Best of' special edition...

United Arrows Styling

More fashion illustrations for Japan... Here is my full page pencil sketch of the contents of a stylish metropolitan Tokyo 20-something's man-bag. It features in volume 12 of Japanese fashion label United Arrows' Styling catalogue. Click on the images for a slightly larger view...

Brutus Magazine

I've got a special fascination with Japan (I used to live there!) so I'm delighted to be able to share my first job for a Japanese client. I was commissioned to draw a large colour pencil sketch of a Comme des Garcons jacket for men's fashion magazine Brutus. Click the image for a closer look. The jacket is a patchwork of close blue shades and different fabric textures which tested my pencil box to the full. More Japanese fashion illustrations are still to be announced later in the autumn...

Men's Health

I've started contributing to Mens Health UK. Here's a small selection of the miniature exercise workthrough sketches that accompany a couple of articles in this month's issue.

Meanwhile, I've also contributed a slightly larger quarter page illustration to the masthead page of the current issue - a portrait of senior editor David Morton attempting October's mini-challenge... 'How Fast Can you Row 1000m?' This could be a good one for friends at my local Metabolic Solution gym to attempt, though I might give it a miss...

Simple Things August

Here are two recent 'How To' tutorials for The Simple Things magazine. Daisy chains...

...And garlic strings. Don't confuse one with the other or you'll look like a mad Frenchman.

Brunswick Review

I recently completed a series of twenty portraits for the Brunswick Review, a lavish bi-annual journal published under the auspices of global PR firm Brunswick. Utilizing a slightly looser, less formal pencil style than usual, I sketched a spectrum of contributors to the Review - here's a handful of them.

Simple Things

Last month, you may recall, I was joyfully giving pictorial instructions via my regular slot in The Simple Things magazine, on how to release your fish into a pond. This month - how to scrape off the poor blighter's scales, slice out his guts and snip off his gills. Just the circle of life, I suppose.

Money Magazine

I recently started contributing regular portraits of commentators and columnists to CNN Money Magazine. Money Mag is produced by the makers of Time magazine, and is read by an estimated 2 million readers per issue in the US.

Sketchbooks: The Hidden Art of Designers, Illustrators and Creatives

My work features in 'Sketchbooks: The Hidden Art of Designers, Illustrators and Creatives', edited by Richard Brereton and published by Laurence King. This is a paperback reprint of the successful 2009 hardback edition of the book - which featured a rare peek into an impressive array of sketchbooks. As well as me, the compendium also includes some pretty famous names - artist Henrik Drescher, illustrators Sara Fanelli, Oliver Jeffers and Marion Deuchars, plus New Order/Joy Division designer Peter Saville...

Tuesday, 11 June 2013

I'm well into the second year of my mammoth commission from the American Society of Human Genetics to draw every single one of their past presidents. These portraits feature on the cover of their monthly journal, as well as adorning the walls of their offices. Here's a handful of the recent candidates...

Wednesday, 15 May 2013

Next year is the tenth anniversary of my visual diary project, and I'm planning to commemorate this milestone by publishing a book of the project in 2014 - a special printed selection of highlights from the 1000+ drawings in the archive. I'll be posting updates on this blog, of course, but there is also a twitter feed @PJFDiaryBook devoted to the project, where I'll be sharing news and previously unseen sketches from the back catalogue.

On a completely different note, here are some recent illustrations I did for The Simple Things, showing you how to release a fish into a pond! Random, I know. I had no idea there was so much involved...

1. With your fish in a bag, hold him in the water to let the little blighter acclimatise to the temperature

2. Empty a cup of pond water into the bag to let him get used to the bacteria.

3. Don't just chuck him in! Hold the bag under the water and let the nervous little fellow venture out in his own time...

Finally... After a busy few weeks I'm off on Friday, for a well deserved ten days of respite from drawing goldfish etc. I'll be back in the studio on May 28th...

Hemispheres Magazine

Here's just a small selection of the colour pencil portraits I've been producing each month for United Airlines 'Hemispheres' - the world's longest running in-flight magazine. Each month the magazine asks a selection of everyday folk to recommend their favourite places in their home city. The portrait subjects have been wonderfully diverse - ranging from chefs and concierges to diplomats and politicians - via (as seen in the last portrait here) a living statue.
